Salix Integra ‘Flamingo’ Salix Integra ‘Flamingo’ The ‘flamingo’ willow is a deciduous shrub or small tree, with branches that droop slightly at the tips. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves, emerge pink in spring, maturing to variegated shades of pink, creamy-white and green before turning predominantly green as the summer progresses.

Make sure the cuttings are at least 2 feet long. Starting with a mature tree, take cuttings at their base when the tree is dormant—after the leaves have fallen in autumn and temperatures are consistently below 32 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Flamingo willow is best planted in soil that is moist but well-drained, in a full sun location. The plant will form an attractive arching habit if left unpruned, but pruning is necessary to take full advantage of the tri-colored leaves and red stems.

I think your Salix 'Flamingo' will have been grafted on to a different Salix rootstock at 'standard' height. The rootstock gives the vigour to the scion (S.Flamingo). I would prune out the thicker stems to the height of the graft union and let new growth start again from there. ive got 2 salix flamingo trees and i was told i dont necessarily need to prune them every year to come back and if i didnt they would get wilder and bushier every year. one has come back bigger and better but the other has only come back on 4 branches & the rest of them are still bare and brown, it has been like this for atleast 4 weeks now where as the other ones twigs turned a redish colour If you cut below the point of the graft you will get shoots of the rootstock, (the plant it's grafted onto, which will probably be different in appearance). Try it and see what happens, you have nothing to lose if the top is all dead, but I doubt you will get the pink shoots from lower down, more likely just green. Wiltshire, United Kingdom .
