In May 1859, a Franklin expedition tent camp was discovered at Cape Felix by the McClintock search expedition, and was revisited 20 years later in July 1879 by the Schwatka expedition (Hobson, Reference Hobson 1859; Schwatka, Reference Schwatka and Stackpole 1965; Stenton, Reference Stenton 2014).

In 1847, the crew abandoned the ships in hopes of finding settlements nearby and reaching mainland Canada. No one ever heard from these sailors again and, except for 3, none of the other sailors’ bodies were ever found. These 3 seamen mentioned above were John Torrington, William Braine and John Hartnell.

Both ships were equipped with iron-layered hulls and robust steam engines designed to withstand the intense Arctic ice. Sir John Franklin led two overland expeditions in northern Canada before undertaking his final voyage. On a previous Arctic journey, Franklin’s party had been reduced to eating the leather on their clothing just to survive. Franklin even ate his footwear, becoming known in England as “the man who ate his boots.”.
